Department of Palaeontology

Department of Palaeontology trains students within the Bachelor's programme with the Palaeontology specialization and Master's programme «Palaeontology and Stratigraphy».

The complex of three discipline cycles: fundamental geological disciplines, biological units (“Zoology”, “Marine communities and ecosystems”, “Comparative Invertebrate anatomy” etc.), as well as special disciplines of Department of Palaeontology underlies palaeontological education.

The Department of Paleontology provides lectures on discipline Palaeontology to all bachelor’s degree programmes (Geophysics excepted); discipline “Biosphere evolution” for the bachelor’s degree programme of Geology, disciplines “Palaeobotany” and “Basic Stratigraphy of marine sediments” for some Master’s degree programmes; “Invertebrate palaeontology and biogeography” for he bachelor’s degree programme of the Department of Methods of palaeontological research (Faculty of Biology). Department of Palaeontology holds a lot of own palaeontological disciplines within the Bachelor's programme, such as: «Palynology», «Palaeontological specification and nomenclature», « Methods of palaeontological researches», «Technique of palaeontological researches», «Palaeobotany: high plants», «Basic Stratigraphy», «Micropalaeontology», «Vertebrate paleozoology», «Paleobiogeography», «Invertebrate paleozoology», «Basic evolution», «Palaeoecology», «Biostratigraphy» etc. Over the last years new disciplines for master’s programme «Palaeontology and Stratigraphy» have been created, such as: «Current issues of Palaeontology and Stratigraphy», «Reef constructions in the Earth history», « Palaeontology of the Precambrian», «Museology», «Select sections of Paleontology», «Bacterial palaeontology», «Paleozoic Zonal Stratigraphy», «Banks and Databases in Palaeobiology » etc. Students of Palaeontology Department take part in general geological summer field work. They have two special summer internships: the Maritime community of the White Sea (Biological scientific station of the MSU) and palaeoecological summer internship (Voronezh Region).

Department of Palaeontology has a branch at the Palaeontological Institute (PIN) RAS. Our students-palaeontologists, graduate and post-graduate students perform research using the modern scanning electron microscopes and tomographic scanner of PIN RAS. Third-year students and master course students have field works and research training at the geological enterprises and research laboratories, such as Palaeontological Institute RAS, Geological Institute RAS, Oceanology Institute and others.

Numerous textbooks and study guides have been created by professors, lecturers and scientists of Palaeontology Department. Classical University textbook “Palaeontology” (2006) by Mikhailova I.A. and Bondarenko O.B. is used at different Universities and Institutes of Russia. Among other textbooks and study guides created at the Department of Palaeontology are,“Micropaleontology” by Maslakova N.I., Gorbachik T.N., Alekseev A.S, et al. (1995); "Paleontological descriptions and nomenclature" (Prof. IS Barskov, Prof. BT Yanin, Associate Professor TV Kuznetsova, 2004), "Palaeobotany. Higher plants »(Senior Research Scientist AL Yurina, Associate Professor OA Orlova, Yu.I. Rostovtsev, 2010)," Short Course of Invertebrate Palaeontology "(prof. BT Yanin, p. VN Nazarova, 2013), "Palaeobiogeography" (Prof. BT Yanin, 2016), "Palaeoecology" (Prof. BT Yanin, 2016), "Manual on the Methods of Palaeontological Research" (Prof. BT Yanin, Prof. IS Barskov, 2017), and others.

More than 500 specialists have completed their education at the Department of Palaeontology since 1947. Many graduates–palaeontologists work at the academic, research, industrial and business organizations in our country and all over the world.

“Palaeontological and stratigraphic characteristics of the Phanerozoic and Late Proterozoic deposits of the Russia and adjacent territories” is the theme that consolidates all scientific investigations at the Department of Paleontology and is supported by the state budget.
