Department of Geochemistry

The department conducts training in all areas of geochemistry within the framework of educational specializations "general geochemistry", "geochemical methods of prospecting for mineral deposits" and "ecological geochemistry", in master's programmes "geochemistry" and "ecological geochemistry". Annually 10-20 people graduate from the department.

A total of 9 Doctors of Science (3 Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences) and 22 PhDs deliver lectures, seminars and workshops on more than 50 courses. The core for the preparation of geochemists are lecture courses "Geochemistry" and "Geochemistry of individual elements." Within special courses, the students learn about the laws of behavior of chemical elements in cosmic and terrestrial endogenous and hypergenic processes and the biosphere, acquire most up-to-date knowledge in the field of geochemistry of isotopes and geochronology.

Practical training in field methods of geochemical and ecological-geochemical works is currently being carried out in the Losiny Ostrov National Park. For their field workshops, the students are sent out on expeditions of the department (to Karelia, the North Caucasus, Kamchatka, Central Russia, various regions of Siberia, etc.), to the institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, to the production divisions of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, and other organizations.

Lecturers and researchers of the Department have published a large number of textbooks and monographs, including "Geochemistry", "Fundamentals of physical-chemical petrology," "Geochemical methods of prospecting for ore deposits," "Mineralogy and petrography," "Mineralogy," "Geochemical methods of prospecting deposits mineralogy, "Thermodynamics of geochemical processes", "Nuclear Geochemistry", "Fundamentals of Physical Geochemistry".

Modern geochemistry is a science that studies the prevalence and fundamental laws of the distribution of elements (and their isotopes) in the Earth's matter and physical-chemical processes of the formation of geological objects for the purpose of understanding their genesis, developing geochemical methods of searching for minerals and of protecting against natural and man-induced hazards.

Modern geochemistry is a broad and diverse science. It is conventionally divided into several sections by methods and objects of research: analytical geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, physical geochemistry (thermodynamics of geochemical processes, physical-chemical analysis, experimental modelling, theoretical and computer modelling), geochemistry of natural objects (geochemistry of mantle, geochemistry of magmatism, geochemistry of metamorphism etc.), geochemical methods of prospecting for mineral deposits, ecological geochemistry. Among the most important results of geochemistry is the development of technology for geochemical prospecting for various minerals (gold, diamonds, non-ferrous metals, etc.).

Scientific research and preparation of students are carried out in the following areas:

  1. physical chemistry of geological processes, which gives students knowledge of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics as related to natural conditions;
  2. methods of substance research. In the dapartment laboratories, students master the fundamentals of analytical chemistry methods: spectral, atomic-absorption, X-ray fluorescent, mass spectral, etc., and also gain experience of working with modern instruments;
  3. computer processing of geochemical data and modelling of natural processes allow students to master the professional level with packages of standard and special computer applications. The acquired knowledge and skills instill in the graduates of the department the culture of quantitative assessment of the quality of geochemical information and taste for strict mathematical models of natural processes;
  4. geochemical methods of prospecting for mineral deposits and ecological geochemistry. During the lectures and workshops, students master the theoretical foundations of geochemical prospecting of ore deposits and ecological and geochemical research. Taking part in fieldworks, they master the methods of field research, and preparing their course papers - methods of processing, interpretation and quantification of ore and technogenic geochemical anomalies.

Graduates of the Department successfully work in scientific organizations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, higher educational institutions of Russia and other countries, major companies specializing in the field of prospecting and mining, engineering and environmental surveys.

На Звенигородской биостанции МГУ  у студентов третьего курса инженерного потока проходит  практика по специальным методам полевых исследований. На практике студенты осваивают полевые методы изучения грунтов и подземных вод: способы определения параметров водоносных горизонтов, оценка взаимодействия подземных и поверхностных вод, изучения химического состава подземных вод, методы изучения состава, состояния и свойств грунтов. В том числе и методами малоглубинной сейсморазведки, электроразведки и георадиолокации.

1-го июля ушёл из жизни заведующий лабораторией геохимических процессов кафедры геохимии Дмитрий Сергеевич Порывкин.

30 июня на геологическом факультете прошло вручение дипломов выпускникам бакалавриата и магистратуры.
